Chinese government’s move against Hong Kong is the latest in a series of measures that are diminishing the city’s longstanding & very proud status. This is a tragedy for the people of Hong Kong, people of China & indeed the people of the world: US President Donald Trump

China has replaced its promise of one country, two systems with one country, one system. Therefore, I am directing my administration to begin the process of eliminating policy exemptions that give Hong Kong different and special treatment: US President Donald Trump

US to Cancel VISA of thousands of Chinese Students

Trump announces he is rounding up Chinese spy rings at US universities

The Trump administration plans to cancel the visas of thousands of Chinese graduate students and researchers in the United States who have direct ties to universities affiliated with the People’s Liberation Army.

Earlier Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said Thursday, “The United States will take action to prevent alleged espionage by Chinese students”.

Asked about a report in The New York Times that Trump was considering throwing out thousands of graduate students, Pompeo said that Chinese students “shouldn’t be here in our schools spying.”

“We have an obligation — a duty — to make sure that students that are coming here to study… aren’t acting on behalf of the Chinese Communist Party,” Pompeo said.

President Trump Announced US officially leaving WHO

President Trump announced the U.S. is officially leaving the World Health Organization.

“The world is now suffering as a result of the maleficence of the Chinese government,” Trump said.

Ambassador Kelly Craft with Twitter handle @USAmbUN in a series of tweets tweeted, “During today’s @UN Security Council discussion of Hong Kong, I urged members to confront China’s empty promise to the people of Hong Kong and the UK. Beijing’s recent actions threaten Hong Kong’s high degree of autonomy and implicate international peace & security.”

Beijing’s actions also contradict China’s international obligations under the @UN -registered Sino-British joint declaration. Beijing has shown it abhors transparency & rule of law. It fulfills its obligations only when convenient for the Chinese Communist Party.

@POTUS & the American people stand resolutely with the people of Hong Kong. We call on the Security Council & all @UN member states to join us in demanding the PRC reverse course & honor its obligations to this institution & Hong Kong’s people. Statement:

Statement by Ambassador Kelly Craft on Today’s Security Council Discussion of the Situation in Hong Kong

For decades, Hong Kong has flourished as a bastion of freedom and enterprise – dynamic, prosperous, and secure. In 1984, the People’s Republic of China made a promise to the United Kingdom and the people of Hong Kong. It was a binding, solemn promise made in the presence of the international community and registered here at the UN as a formal treaty, that freedom and prosperity in Hong Kong would be respected and safeguarded after the handover.

During today’s Security Council discussion, I urged members to confront the shameful truth – that China’s promise was empty from the start. On May 28, the People’s Republic of China National People’s Congress approved a resolution to unilaterally and arbitrarily impose national security legislation on Hong Kong – an action, along with other incursions over the past year – that destroys Hong Kong’s high degree of autonomy.

Just as we have all learned during the COVID-19 crisis, at the World Health Organization, the World Trade Organization, and elsewhere, the PRC abhors transparency and only fulfills its international commitments and obligations when it’s convenient. The PRC’s actions to undermine the Sino-British Joint Declaration and the Basic Law eviscerate the free society that has underpinned Hong Kong’s success since 1997, and are part and parcel of this larger, unfortunate pattern of behavior.

Today I asked the Council one simple question: are we going to take the honorable stand to defend the human rights and the dignified way of life that millions of Hong Kong citizens have enjoyed and deserve like all freedom loving people, or are we going to allow the Chinese Communist Party to violate international law and force its will on the people of Hong Kong who look to us to preserve their way of life and their freedoms?

The United States is resolute, and calls upon all UN members states to join us in demanding that the PRC immediately reverse course and honor its international legal commitments to this institution and to the Hong Kong people.
