China’s Show of Force in Bohai on Tiananmen Anniversary – Whom Are They Threatening? Chinese Citizens or Taiwan? No country with a clear strategy would want to increase the number of theaters of war it is engaged in. The only option is when you have strength enough to win in all the fronts. But, then, we notice that China is opening new fronts – one after the other, without even concluding a theater successfully.

As of now, it is fighting with India(militarily), USA(militarily and economically), against the whole world in WHO, against Taiwan, against Hong Kong and a thousand more – all the while facing serious domestic disturbances. The destruction of jobs in Wuhan and the chaos on the borders of Hubei when the lock down was released in Hubei is but a sample of what’s in store.

Hong Kong is burning, Guangzhou is not happy and Indian theater is not working good. In fact, just yesterday, China announced it will withdraw 2 km back from their current positions in Chinese Occupied Ladakh a.k.a. Aksai Chin while India will withdraw by only 1 km. As if this isn’t enough an insult, China has sacked the Officer commanding the Ground Forces facing India. If going by what happened in Pakistan post Balakot when the Chief of Intelligence, Army’s Supreme Commander for Indian theater, Army’s Chief of Propaganda were sacked, this move can only spell doom for China.

In fact, one shouldn’t forget that the last time China did this was in 1987 after the disastrous defeat against India in India’s Arunachal Pradesh which China claims as it’s own where it sacked the head of Tibet Military Command and even the head of Chengdu Military Region. This was immediately followed by a massive uprising in Tibet and later, Tiananmen. In fact, situation is much similar today – shoddy performance of the military, corruption, bleak job scenario and police excesses. Naval Drill in Bohai Sea

The PLA 73rd Group Army recently conducted its fire power check in which 68 amphibious tanks managed to crawl to the beaches from the sea, as the tanks were afraid to go in the open beach and practiced release of smoke to camouflage and hide from retaliation.

In another training operation, the PLA 74th Group Army used a large civilian cargo ship but could transport only 50 tanks, armored vehicles and infantry fighting vehicles.

The 73rd Group Army and the 74th Group Army are based in eastern and southern China, and both are believed to be trained to attempt takeover of Taiwan or Hong Kong. Global Times is threatening Taiwan, but Chinese cannot be trusted. Hong Kong or even any other neighbor could also be the target. Mere 120 tanks cannot be enough to take over Taiwan. This small number can only be for Tiananmen kind massacre in Hong Kong.

Looking from the outside, China’s Naval Exercises in Bohai Bay should come as a surprise because both Japanese and South Korean theaters are calm. With a string of losses under it’s belt, why would China want to open another theater in a stable region? When it’s whole of energy should be concentrated on Indian theater and Hong Kong – and even Taiwan, what explains this sudden flare up of tensions in Bohai region?

It is possible that these exercises are being held with China itself as the target and not the outer world. Had China acted fast enough against Tibet and the domestic protests, Tiananmen Square wouldn’t have happened. One should explore what level of Chinese show of strength is actually directed against the simmering anger due to loss of standing and loss of jobs in the post COVID world. If this is going to be the case, the world should we wary enough to see that the Chinese citizens are protected against their government and ensure they come to no harm.

Points to Ponder

International community should maintain a close watch of Chinese action in Tibet, Hong Kong and Taiwan. The way Fascist China is using its aircraft career and the amphibious armored vehicles and conducting amphibious landing and naval drills, it is possible that such exercises are directed towards invading Taiwan or sending its PLA to commit the biggest massacre in Hong Kong like the way China crushed the protests during Tiananmen massacre as well as Chengdu massacres.
