There was a shooting outside the White House and President Donald Trump was rushed out of the White House briefing room Monday evening. He later said the Secret Service had shot someone nearby.
The shooting happened on 17th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue. The suspect opened fired on a non-White House employee and a Uniformed Secret Service officer returned fire, according to the official.
At 5:51 p.m., just a few minutes into Trump’s press briefing, a Secret Service agent told the president he needed to leave the room, and the doors to the briefing room were locked with members of the media inside.
Minutes later, Trump returned to the podium to inform reporters that the Secret Service had shot someone outside the White House, and the person was being transported to the hospital in an unknown condition.
US Secret Service tweeted: “The Secret Service can confirm there has been an officer involved shooting at 17th Street and Pennsylvania Ave. Law enforcement officials are on the scene.”
The Secret Service later confirmed the shooting and said that both an adult male and one of its officers had been transported to the hospital.
“It seems to be very well under control. I’d like to thank the Secret Service for doing their always quick and very effective work,” Trump said.
Trump said it was his understanding that the person was armed, but that it was still unclear what led to the shooting or whether it was in any way related to the president. He said the Secret Service planned to hold a briefing about it.
When asked whether the shooting had “rattled” him, Trump responded casually: “I don’t know. Do I seem rattled?”
“The world’s always been a dangerous place. It’s not something that’s unique. You look back over the centuries, the world has been a dangerous place, very dangerous place, and it will continue, I guess, for a period of time.”
According to another source familiar with the matter, the Secret Service called for an ambulance at 5:55 p.m. ET and one came shortly after. The suspect, an adult male, was transported to a hospital in critical condition with one gunshot wound to the upper body, the source said.
In addition to the Secret Service, the Metropolitan Police Department was assisting with the investigation.
Trump said “from what I understand” the suspect was armed. He said the suspect was shot outside the White House grounds but close to the fence.
Asked what the Secret Service agent told him when he was approached mid-sentence, Trump said, “Just told me when he came up, you pretty much saw it like I did. He said, ‘Sir, could you please come with me?’ So, you were surprised. I was surprised, also. I think it’s probably it’s pretty unusual but very, very professional people, they all do a fantastic job, as you know.”
Responding to a question from reporters, Trump said he does not think the suspect “breached anything.”
“It was on the outside grounds, so I don’t believe anything was breached. I asked that question. They were relatively far away,” Trump said.
Ever since protests started springing up in front of the White House earlier this summer, Secret Service agents have constructed heavy barriers around the White House grounds. The building, which is normally easily within view from multiple points open to the public, is now surrounded by layers of fencing and walls.
As per some sources, White House shooting suspect has been identified as ex-marine Frank Hassle.
Frank made several posts on his tumblr account about his PTSD from the Iraq war, as well as making several posts referencing “having an attack”. Investigations are going on.
